2 Ways to Celebrate St. Paddy’s Day on the Road

It’s almost St. Patrick’s Day, and for RVing enthusiasts, it’s a great time to be on the road traveling! There are plenty of celebrations across the country each year and you may be near one that catches your fancy.

Find a Festival or Parade

In the Southeast, RVers can attend the St. Patrick’s Day festival and parade in Savannah, Georgia, which is the second-largest St. Patrick’s Day festival in the United States. This year, the parade will take place on Friday, March 17, at 10:15 a.m. and the festival and activities will run throughout the weekend. If you need a place to camp, Hardeeville RV is a nearby RV campground that is located just 10 minutes outside Savannah and close to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.

Another St. Patrick’s Day parade option is the one in Boston, Massachusetts, which is one of the world’s largest parades and recently deemed the the best city to visit to celebrate the holiday. The parade will take place in the afternoon on Sunday, March 19 in South Boston. Home to a large Irish population with rich heritage, Boston’s festivities run the gamut from food to music and dancing. There are no RV parks in Boston proper, but there are campgrounds in the surrounding towns and cities. One example is Winter Island Marine Park in Salem, with nearby commuter rail service into the city.

Celebrate at Your Rig

If the idea of winding through crowds of revelers isn’t your mug of green beer, and you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle of St. Paddy’s events, you can still celebrate in your own way. Whenever you’ve parked your RV, you can still enjoy the holiday by making some traditional Irish foods, such as Colcannon, a type of mashed potatoes dish flavored with green onions, garlic, and greens. Or light a campfire and make Irish soda bread–a delicious, easy-to- make bread that can be made with or without raisins–in a cast-iron dutch oven or pan. Wash down your meal with Guinness or other traditional beverages, such as Irish coffee.

To truly get in the spirit of the holiday, you can decorate your RV with shamrock lights, a garden banner, and other items on the outside of your rig. In the interior, you can add splashes of green, with throw pillows and blankets.
