3 Benefits of Winterizing Your RV

For many RVers who keep their rigs in warmer climates, winterizing isn’t necessary. But for those who live in areas with cold, winter temperatures, winterizing is an important part of responsible RV ownership and maintenance. But why is it important? Let’s discuss three benefits of winterizing an RV.

Prevents Water Lines from Freezing

This is perhaps the biggest benefit of winterizing. Any water that stays in your RV plumbing can freeze once temperatures plummet, and this could lead to cracked pipes and costly repairs. But draining the water lines and running antifreeze through them can prepare your plumbing system for winter and prevent your pipes from freezing. The process to winterize your pipes is not fast, but needs to be followed step by step for the best results.

Keeps Critters Out

When winter arrives, most living creatures are looking for warm places to hunker down. That includes rodents and pests, who may find your RV as a suitable option for them if you aren’t prepared. Properly winterize your rig by sealing cracks and crevices and removing all trash and food from the interior.

Maintains Battery Life

Your battery can handle a lot, but in cold temps, it’s best to disconnect your battery as part of your RV winterization process. Why? Because even though you may think your battery will stay charged when your RV is not in use, that’s not the case. Always-on systems (such as propane leak detectors) can continually draw from the battery and cause a condition called sulfation, when battery plates become contaminated with crystals. In addition, when a battery is not fully charged, the solution in batteries can freeze in cold temperatures and lead to a cracked case. This can ruin your battery and cause a corrosive acid leak. So avoid these problems and keep your battery in top condition, remove it and store it someplace warm.
