3 Tips for Finding an RV Campsite in 2021

The RV and camping industries saw a massive boom in 2020 and frankly, this freight train isn’t slowing down in 2021. The pandemic caused an influx of new RV enthusiasts, those who either lost jobs and/or sold their homes to begin the full-time RV life and those whose companies went fully remote, in addition to the loyal RV camping fans that already existed! As a result, campground and campsite availability is incredibly limited this year, making it difficult to snag a coveted reservation.

So what can you do? Here are three tips to help you find and book an RV campsite for this season!

Book as far in advance as possible

If you want to camp in highly sought-after areas this spring or summer, you may have already missed the boat! But don’t give up yet. Make reservations at your prime locations as far in advance as you possibly can. Be aware that you may not get the perfect spot or even get your exact, preferred dates. Have a list of backup sites to reference as needed.

Choose the road—and campsites—less traveled

If your prime locations are completely booked, but you still want to get some RV camping time in this season, look to less-popular locations and campsites. While Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land is also seeing record-high boondocking visitors, you may have better luck securing spots on remote government land, private land opened up by homeowners, or even through memberships like Harvest Host.

Be flexible and take advantage of cancelations

Just like in 2020, people will be making plans in 2021 that they may have to cancel. So, never underestimate the power of a cancelation! If you have a list of a few must-stay campgrounds or sites, do your due diligence and call frequently to check on cancelations or ask to be added to a call list when spots open up. More importantly, be flexible with your dates. A cancelation may open up during a time that you hadn’t planned on traveling, but if you can snag that time, do it.

What if you can’t find a campsite?

When all else fails, if you’re unable to find campsite opportunities for this season, but you’d like to make some money instead, consider renting out your RV. Because the RV manufacturing industry is still recovering from the backlog of orders, there is a serious lack of RVs for sale at the moment, which means many people are looking to rent.
