4 Hacks for Cold-Weather RV Camping

While the heat will seemingly never subside here in Florida, there are other parts of the country that have entered the cooler season. For people who refuse to stop camping just because summer is over, the late fall into winter months offer an excellent opportunity for RV excursions, but it can get chilly and even downright cold. If you’re looking to do some cold-weather RV camping this year, check out these four hacks to make it easy!

Position Your RV

Cooler temps are often accompanied by wind, which can make it feel colder than it actually is. Plus, wind can make an RV feel more unstable if it blows up against the sides of the rig, causing side-to-side motion. To combat these issues, park so that the head or rear of your rig is facing into the wind. This will eliminate any side-to-side motion and will help limit the surface area of the rig exposed to wind, ideally keeping interior temperatures warmer as a result.

Heat Up Your Bed

No one likes laying down in a freezing cold bed when it’s already cold outside. Before you go to bed, you can heat things up by turning on an electric blanket. Or, if you’re boondocking or conserving electricity, using a hot water bottle also works. Simply fill an insulated, rubber hot water bottle with hot water (not boiling) and slip it between the sheets a few minutes before you lay down. You’ll be toasty and warm as you fall asleep.

Use Rugs for Added Insulation

Whether your RV has carpet or not, you can always add rugs for increased insulation. Rugs can help keep heat from the interior of your rig from radiating outside, making it easier to maintain a more comfortable indoor temperature.

Invest in a Dehumidifier

If it’s cold enough, you may turn on your RVs furnace or use space heaters to provide warmth. But doing so can increase the humidity levels in your rig, which can lead to excess moisture and the risk for mold and mildew growth. Buying a quality, space-friendly dehumidifier can help combat this. Simply run it when you’re running your furnace to keep excess moisture at bay. It’s important to note that it’s best to be on shore power to operate your furnace and dehumidifier.
