People with mobility challenges don’t need to stop RVing or think they can’t get into the lifestyle. In fact, with a few simple modifications, an RV can become more accessible and a great way for anyone with mobility challenges to travel!
Here are 4 ideas to get you started:
Add a Lift
A great mod to consider is an automatic lift. These hydraulic systems work to lift someone in a wheelchair or anyone who might have trouble climbing stairs or walking up a ramp. They can be installed at the main door or on a passenger side door.
Reconsider Dining Table Options
In rigs without slide outs, there is little extra room for accessibility renovations. But even if you don’t have slide outs, there’s an easy way to modify a dining room to make more space, especially for those with mobility challenges. Simply remove the dinette table and benches and add a bar or credenza for easy access. The bar can be used by anyone in a wheelchair or with other walking aid equipment, making it easy to eat, do homework, or other activities.
Install Handrails
Navigating through an RV can be difficult, even for someone who doesn’t have mobility challenges. Adding handrails in the hallways and bathroom of an RV can make a world of difference, allowing for anyone to balance themselves and have an aid to sit or stand while using the toilet or bathing.
Add a Roll-in Shower or Wet Bath
Speaking of handrails in the bathroom, another modification to make your RV more accessible is to install a roll-in shower. These showers accommodate wheelchairs and allow users to bathe comfortably while seated. Turning your bathroom into a wet bath is another option, where all surfaces can be wet, whether you’re standing near the sink or sitting on the toilet.
