Shopping around for insurance is the type of task that most people put off. It can be time consuming and confusing to get an insurance policy, especially for an RV that serves as a recreational vehicle and a home.
If you’re shopping around for RV insurance policies, here are a few questions you can ask your agent to ensure you’re getting the best policy for your needs:
How many days of usage does this policy allow?
Many policies have seasonality in mind and allow for a set number of days for full coverage. If you’re a seasonal RVer, you’ll want to select a policy that offers full coverage for 150 days, for example. You can enjoy your time on the road without any fears of not being covered in the event of an issue. In off season, you can potentially lower your coverage while your rig is in storage. If you’re a full-timer, you’ll want to ensure your policy is sufficient to cover you while the vehicle is moving and parked throughout the year.
What type of coverage is best—replacement cost or actual cash value?
Having a replacement cost policy means that your newer model rig will be replaced with the same or a similar quality RV if your vehicle is damaged within a certain time period after purchase. An actual cash value policy means that if your rig is destroyed, you’ll only be paid for the current value of your RV. An actual cash value policy may be in your best interest if you have an older model RV that has depreciated in value.
Are payment plans available?
Paying for an entire insurance policy up front can make a significant dent in your checking account and can be challenging to budget for. So be sure to ask your agent if payment plans are available. You may be able to pay in four installments or even up to 10 installments.
Does this policy cover custom features and personal property?
You’re likely to have personal belongings in your rig—clothes, electronics, housewares, decor, and the like—that help make it feel like home. If those items are stolen or destroyed, you’d want to be able to replace them, so ensure your policy covers personal property. In addition, ask if custom features such as awnings, speciality stereos, custom wheels, satellite dishes, bike racks and more are covered. Don’t forget to ask if custom features are covered if they originally came with the rig or if you added them.
