5 Healthy Snacks to Keep You Satisfied on a Road Trip

There’s nothing better than kicking off a road trip in your RV. The excitement of discovering new towns and stopping every so often to explore local shops, eateries, and more is part of the fun. But to get to those places, driving needs to happen first. And while those long stretches of road unfold before you, it’s important to fuel your body with foods that are healthy and have the nutrients you need to remain alert and energetic.

So what snacks are great options for your next RV road trip? Here are a few for you to consider!

Protein

Protein plays an important role in regulating many bodily processes and ensuring that your cells, organs, and tissues function properly. In short, protein is what will help you power through long days and drives, so it’s important to work a few options into your road trip snack regimen. Great sources of protein include:

  • Hard-boiled eggs – Whether you store these in your rig’s refrigerator or in a cooler in your tow vehicle, pre-peeled hard-boiled eggs are a super way to incorporate quick doses of protein into your system. At about 70 calories and 6 grams of protein for an entire egg (including yolk), you’ll get a healthful, easy-to-eat snack.
  • Protein bars – There are no shortages of protein bars on the market, so you’ll have a wide selection to choose from. You’ll find bars that range from 5 grams to 12 grams of protein and even more, but choose a bar that appeals to you and has a good balance of protein, fats, carbohydrates, and fiber.
  • Nuts – Nuts such as almonds and cashews are not only easy to grab and eat while driving, they are also protein powerhouses. At about 5 to 7 grams of protein per ¼ cup—plus a dose of healthy fats!—nuts will help sustain you for long drives.
  • Cheese – String cheese isn’t just for kids! It’s a great snack for you to consider during RV road trips. Cheese sticks have about 7 grams of protein, and thanks to their convenient packaging and size, are just perfect for eating on the go.

It’s important to remember that you shouldn’t go overboard with protein, especially when you’re driving for long periods of time and won’t be active. If you’re not burning enough of the protein you consume each day, it can turn to fat.

Fruit

Easy-to-handle fruits such as bananas, grapes, and apples make for excellent snacks, especially while you’re driving. Packed with fiber, fruit provides an easy way for you to curb hunger and remain fuller longer. Plus, you might get a little energy boost, thanks to the natural sugar in fruit.

Keeping a variety of snacks nearby while you’re driving in your RV from point A to point B will allow you to quickly and easily refuel your body and not have to rely on gas station chips, soda, and sweets to eat. What’s more, ensuring you have healthy snacks on hand can better help you manage certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, while traveling in your RV.
