Many people have a hard time maximizing storage space in their houses. When you’re dealing with the tight space of an RV, this problem increases tenfold. And if you’re a full-time RVer, you’ve got all your household goods, furniture, and other possessions packed into your rig. No basement, no attic, and no garage – it’s time to get creative! From unique wall space options to smart decluttering techniques, there are a variety of ways that you can maximize the square footage of your RV while still keeping your important items close at hand.
1. Over-the-door options – While there aren’t many doors in an RV, the doors that do exist offer a flat surface that can be leveraged for a variety of space-saving solutions. With properly fitted hooks, you can latch a shoe rack, garbage can, jewelry organizer, laundry hamper, book shelf, and pantry shelves right over the bathroom or bedroom doors for storage that doesn’t take up any floor space.
2. Magnetic strips – Say hello to magnets, your new best friends! When space is limited inside an RV, the walls have can be utilized for storage solutions. From magnetic knife racks and spice racks to magnetic storage panels for tools and utensils, the options are virtually endless when you want your walls to function like closets and drawers.
3. Slide-out drawers – Most RVs come with built-in, slide-out drawers beneath beds, kitchen benches, and tables. However, you can easily install slide-out trays and racks with some simple mounting hardware available at most home improvement stores.
4. Shoe racks – Soft hanging shoe storage bags can be used for far more than shoes. From jewelry and socks to cleaning supplies and toiletries, vinyl or mesh shore storage racks can be attached to doors, walls, and the insides of cabinets for loads of added space.
5. Nesting utensils – Kitchens in RVs tend to be extremely tight on space. Maximize every square inch by investing in some nesting utensils like mixing bowls, strainers, measuring cups, and measuring spoons. Not only do they save space, but nested utensils reduce the amount of clutter rolling around in drawers and cupboards that could potentially fall out when the rig is in motion.
And once you’ve finally figured out how to maximize your storage space, consider doing a possession purge – the easiest way to increase storage space is to get rid of the items you need to store. One of the great parts of RV living is that you’re forced to really evaluate all those odds and ends that you keep around. Quit that addiction to “stuff” cold turkey by getting rid of clothes, décor, utensils, books, and any other items that you haven’t used or worn in the last 8 to 12 months.
