5 Ways to Make Cooking While Boondocking a Cinch

Camping is all about being resourceful and that couldn’t be truer than when dry camping in your RV. Also known as boondocking, dry camping is essentially going off-grid, without access to electricity and water hookups. But even without these conveniences, you and your camping companions still have to eat and try to conserve water and supplies as much as possible.

So how do you do that? Check out these 5 easy tips for cooking while boondocking!

Don’t Be Afraid to Cook in Your Campfire

Gathering around a campfire making s’mores is what camping is all about, right? Yes, but don’t limit yourself to s’mores-making only! Why not cook your meals, too? With a few easy modifications, such as grill grates, griddles, or even just a few sticks, you can be using your fire to cook everything from fire-roasted hot dogs to fried eggs and bacon. Using your outdoor fire will help keep use of your rig’s propane to a minimum and will keep the interior cleaner than if you cooked all your meals inside.

Fire Up the Grill

Another excellent way to cook your meals while boondocking is on a grill. Whether charcoal or gas-powered, a grill will allow you to quickly cook a decent amount of food in a short period of time. It will also keep the heat and moisture the arises from cooking in an RV kitchen out of your rig. Simply get the grill going to sear the day’s catch and some veggies for a healthful, simple meal.

Use One Pot or Pan

Limit yourself to cooking your meals in one pot or pan to make things as easy as possible. Excellent one-pan meal options include stir fry, soups and stews, and pasta dishes, but you can get as creative as you want with what you can cook in one pan. Try using cast iron options, which are incredibly durable and versatile.

Preparation is Key

Plan your boondocking meals out in advance. This will not only help you shop for just the ingredients you need but will also make cooking each meal easier. Avoid complicated dishes – stick to simple options for the best results. The fewer the ingredients you have to deal with, the better.

Keep Paper Plates on Hand

Sure, using paper plates and napkins doesn’t mean you’re saving trees, but it will mean that cleaning up after cooking and eating will help to conserve water you’d normally use to wash dishes. If going environmentally friendly is your goal, look for biodegradable dishware and cutlery.
