For RVers, learning how to pack only what is needed is an art form that takes time and practice. But there are typically a few must-have items – the “you’re on a deserted island” types of items – that RVers always bring with them on a camping trip, even when the goal is to live as minimally as possible. Sure, these items include food, clothing, and other no-brainer necessities. But what about the essential things you need to set up your campsite’s outdoor space?

- An outdoor rug or doormat – Rugs and doormats can help keep dirt outside where it belongs and away from the interior of your rig. Have you ever tried vacuuming up a week’s worth of sand out of carpet? You don’t want to. Get yourself a doormat at the very least and ask anyone who enters your RV to wipe their shoes on it or leave their shoes at the door.
- A screen around the awning or separate screen tent – Nothing is more bothersome than dealing with pests when you’re trying to enjoy the great outdoors. After a long day of kayaking, hiking, fishing, swimming, or biking, all you want to do is kick back and enjoy a cold beverage, not slap at mosquitoes. Keep bugs at bay by erecting a screen around your RV’s awning. Another option is to set up a standalone screen tent.
- Camp chairs – Oftentimes, the only seating available at a campsite is a picnic table or tree stumps. To be able to relax and sit wherever you’d like, you need some camp chairs. These chairs have a collapsible metal frame and durable fabric fashioned into a chair back, seat, and arm rests. They are lightweight and can be used pretty much anywhere.
- A grill – For most RVers, no outdoor setup is complete without a grill. It can get hot and crowded when cooking inside even the biggest of RVs, so cooking outside is always a plus. If you’re in the market for a grill, think about how often you’ll use it, how many people you’ll regularly serve when grilling, and how much room you have in your rig to store a grill. There are plenty of portable grills on the market, so you can choose the option that works best for your needs.
- Lighting – A campsite isn’t complete without some sort of lighting. String lights are a common addition to most RV enthusiasts’ campsites because they are easy to setup and provide a lovely ambient glow in the evenings. Other popular lighting options you can consider are lanterns and torches.
