Benefits of Leveling Your Rig

You’re finally on the RV trip you’ve been planning for months. The sun is shining, you’ve backed into your campsite like a pro, and you’re just about ready to sit in a camp chair and start relaxing. But don’t kick back with a cold beverage just yet—your setup isn’t complete if you haven’t leveled your rig.

RV leveling is a key component to ensuring your RV experience goes smoothly. Your rig may be equipped with a hydraulic leveling system, in which case, congratulations! Hydraulic leveling jacks are electric and can extend with a push of a button, leveling the RV on their own. If you don’t have hydraulic jacks installed on your RV, you may use wooden or plastic leveling blocks to level out your RV.

Why Do You Need to Level Your RV?

For one, leveling and stabilizing your RV will make it more comfortable for you. Think about this: Would you really get a good night’s sleep if your feet were lower than your head when you laid down? Ensuring your rig is level will even out any minor or major leveling differences with the ground on which your RV is parked.

Secondly, leveling is essential if you want certain appliances to work properly. For example, many refrigerators in RVs are absorption refrigerators, which run on ammonia, water, and hydrogen gas to create the cooling effect. These fridges rely on gravity for the ammonia liquid to fall from the condenser fins to the evaporator coils, which is where the cooling process in the refrigerator takes place. For this reason, when the fridge is running but is on an unlevel surface, you can damage the appliance. In fact, it only takes about half an hour of running and being unlevel to cause damage.

Minimizing stress to the RV frame is a third reason for leveling your rig. When not level, many areas of your rig can become compromised, including doors, pipes, and even the chassis. However, properly leveling your RV will ensure that your doors and cupboards will open and close as intended and the water in your pipes will flow properly and not pool in areas where it shouldn’t. In addition, a leveled RV will ensure that your frame is properly supporting the full weight of your rig.
