Campfire Cooking: Recipes and Techniques for Delicious Meals While RV Camping

If you’re like most RVers, you probably cherish the thrill of hitting the open road, exploring new places, and reveling in the beauty of nature. But one of the most underrated joys of RV life is the opportunity for some good old-fashioned campfire cooking. If you’ve never cooked over a campfire, you’re missing out! And we promise, it’s not as complicated as it may seem.

Here are a few easy recipes and techniques for whipping up mouthwatering meals for four people right at your campsite. No need for a fancy kitchen–all you need is a campfire, some kitchen tools you may already have, some basic ingredients (no more than five!), and a little culinary creativity.

Prepare for Campfire Cooking

To ensure you have the perfect fire on which to cook, you’ll need to have a lighter, tinder, kindling, and plenty of firewood. Be sure to buy or source firewood that is local to the area you are staying.

Once you have the ingredients for fire, you can focus on the gear. There are plenty of fancy options out there for campfire cooking, but all you really need are a few basics. These include:

  • A grill grate – This is what you’ll place in the firepit over the fire and what you’ll put your pan or pot on.
  • A cast iron pan – A camping essential! It can even be used directly on hot coals.
  • Steel tongs and a spatula – Be sure to buy all steel utensils that are long enough to move food around without flames touching your hands.

  • In a cast-iron skillet, scramble the eggs over the campfire.
  • Add the diced bell peppers and cook until they soften.
  • Sprinkle the cooked bacon and cheddar cheese on top of the eggs.
  • Once the cheese melts, spoon the mixture onto the flour tortillas.
  • Roll up your burritos and enjoy!

  • Place a slice of cheese (or more!) between two slices of bread, buttered sides facing out.
  • Wrap the sandwiches in foil, making sure to leave some space for air circulation.
  • Grill the foil-wrapped sandwiches over the campfire, flipping with tongs occasionally until they’re golden brown and the cheese is melted.
