Can You Camp with an RV in Redwoods National Park?

Redwood trees are some of Earth’s most magnificent organisms and some of the largest and tallest trees. To see them in person at the Redwood National and State Parks in California can be a breathtaking and life changing experience–not just because of the majestic trees, but for the prairies, rivers, and coastline as well! For the avid RVer, yes, you can camp with an RV in these parks. Doing so may be a little challenging but it’s not impossible!

Camping Options Inside the Parks

There are four developed campgrounds and backcountry sites that visitors can use for camping in the Redwood National and State Parks. The backcountry campsites are not accessible for RVs, but the campgrounds can accommodate RVs. Reservations are required and it’s best to make them early, especially for summertime trips. Before you book, keep in mind that the campgrounds have size restrictions.

Mill Creek Campground

The largest of the four RV campgrounds is Mill Creek Campground, located in the Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park about nine miles outside of Crescent City, CA. This park is situated among gorgeous redwoods and rugged Pacific coastline. The park does not have electrical hookups, but does feature showers, restrooms, food lockers, a dump station, and other amenities. Trailers up to 24 feet and RVs up to 28 feet are permitted.

Elk Prairie Campground

Elk Prairie Campground is located in the heart of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park and is just north of Eureka, CA. In addition to the winding trails through old-growth redwoods, this park has a prairie on which Roosevelt elk roam. Campers enjoy ADA accessible restrooms, fire pits and barbecues, a visitor center, and campfire center, among other amenities. However, there are no RV hookups at the campsites.Trailers up to 24 feet and RVs up to 27 feet are permitted.

Gold Bluffs Beach Campground

Gold Bluffs Beach Campground is another camping location near Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park in Orick, CA. The campground is situated among the dunes along a stunning 10-mile stretch of beach. There are no RV hookups and the access road to the campground itself is unpaved and narrow. Therefore, this location cannot accommodate vehicles more than 8 feet wide and 24 feet long. RVs up to 24 feet are permitted, but trailers of any length are not.

Jedediah Smith Campground

Jedediah Smith Campground is located in the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park near Crescent City, CA. Campers can enjoy boating, hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Drinking water, restrooms, and showers are available but there are no RV hookups. Trailers up to 21 feet and RVs up to 25 feet are permitted.

Camping Options Outside the Parks

There are plenty of options for RV camping outside of the Redwood parks, too, including the Crescent City/Redwoods KOA, which has full-hookup sites with cable and Wi-Fi.
