Easy Ways to Stay Fit on the Road

We all know that sitting day in and day out at a desk out isn’t healthy, and in fact, can lead to serious health conditions, such as back pain, cardiovascular disease, and others. That’s why we take vacations, right? To get away from the office and out into the world? But when driving your RV, it’s possible that you could sit all day, too, just like at the office. So it’s important to make sure that you still get some exercise every day, even when you’re traveling. Need inspiration? Here are a few suggestions to get moving:
  • Take a walk – This may seem pretty self-explanatory, but an excellent way to get exercise each day is to walk. Park the RV at the far end of a parking lot when you stop for supplies and walk to the store. Walk around the campground or take hikes in nearby scenic locations. Regardless of where you walk, as long as you can get a good session in each day, you’ll feel good and keep your health in check, especially after long days of driving.
  • Go for a bike ride – Bringing bikes on your trip may already be a given, but if not, definitely consider taking bikes along. Biking, like walking, is another easy way to get some exercise in each day and get your blood pumping. Whether you bike around the campground or take a day trip biking through trails or around a city, you’ll get a great workout and see your surroundings faster than walking.
  • Jump in the water – For most people, one activity that is part of nearly every spring and summer camping trip is swimming. Jump in the lake, pool, or ocean, and instead of just splashing around, do some resistance exercises or swim laps to burn calories and strengthen muscles.
  • Head to a park – In many cities, local parks have outdoor fitness equipment (think pull up bars and chin up benches) that give you an opportunity to do arm, leg, and core exercises as you walk or job around a track. Doing this type of training will not only give you a dose of cardio by walking, but will also allow you to work in some strength training at various points, which will help you burn even more calories.
  • Go to the gym – If you are a member at a gym that has locations nationwide, you may be able to workout at gyms located along your route and at your destination. If you have a normal exercise routine at home, you can complete that every time you hit the gym and barely skip a beat while on vacation.
Whatever exercise you choose to do, try to shoot for 30 minutes of activity each day. But don’t forget to consult your doctor before starting any exercise program. Do you workout while traveling in your rig? What exercises work the best for you while on the road?
