Helpful Tips to Keep Your Gas Tank Full This Summer

The recent Colonial Pipeline systems hack and shutdown has sparked discussions about potential regional or national gas shortages. This has left people concerned that it will be difficult to find gas in the near future and has unfortunately led to panic buying, which only worsens the situation.

While the pipeline is now operational again, it’s important to note another issue that could limit the supply: As a result of the COVID-19 shutdown last year, there is a lack of certified and licensed truck drivers to deliver the gas across the country.

Whether you tow a travel trailer with a vehicle or drive a Class A, B, or C RV, you obviously need gasoline to get to and from your destination. So, what can you do to avoid running too low on gas during this summer travel season? How can you be prepared for a potential gas shortage if one arises?

Download a Gas App

Apps like GasBuddy, a popular fuel price monitoring and reporting platform, can identify the best gas prices at stations near you and help you save on gas. What’s more, in extreme circumstances such as a gas shortage, the app allows users to report a lack of gas at stations to help keep the traveling public informed. Simply keep an eye on the app to stay abreast of developments.

Don’t Go Below Half a Tank

Don’t wait until the last minute to look for gas when you’re running on fumes! It’s a good rule of thumb to never let your gas level go below half or a quarter of a tank. Getting into this habit will help keep your tank full more regularly and leave you with a reasonable amount of gas in the event of a shortage or inaccessibility to gas.

Be Extra Vigilant Around Holidays

With summertime holidays such as Memorial Day weekend and 4th of July just around the bend, RV and road travel in general is sure to increase dramatically. Be sure to plan accordingly and fill up as frequently as possible if you’re on the road during the holidays.

Budget for Higher Gas Prices

In times of gas shortages, prices where gas is available can skyrocket. To be prepared in any situation, budget accordingly and plan on paying more for gas.
