How to Plan a Shakedown Trip

Congratulations – you’ve just scored a new RV! Whether it’s brand-spanking new off the lot or previously loved by another RV enthusiast, finally getting a rig of your own is an exciting event. But before you start planning an escape to your dream destination hundreds of miles from home, there’s a major task to check off your list: the shakedown trip.

What is an RV Shakedown Trip?

For starters, an RV shakedown can be thought of as a test run with your rig. The ultimate purpose of an RV shakedown trip is to really get to know your new RV, understand how all the systems operate, test them, and identify any issues. In addition, it can help you figure out what you really need to pack to be comfortable during a camping trip and how to organize your space.

Things to Keep in Mind

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you plan an RV shakedown trip:

  • Reserve a campsite at a campground about an hour or two (no more) from your home or from your RV seller so you’re not in unfamiliar territory. Ideally, choose a location that’s close to grocery and big-box stores in case you need supplies or need items and tools for repairs.
  • Opt for a pull-through site so that you don’t have to worry about backing in to your campsite.
  • Ensure your campsite has full hookups for electricity, water, and sewer so you can test those systems.
  • Get comfortable driving and parking your rig. For example, get familiar with the turning radius and blind spots, and note how long it takes to accelerate and slow down.
  • Confirm that the campground has WiFi and good cell phone reception so that you can get in touch with your RV seller or dealer or call for service if needed.
  • Plan to read the user manuals and keep notes of any questions or issues you come across as you check all the systems, press all the buttons, and flip all the switches.

To ensure you have everything you need for your shakedown trip, search online for pre-made checklists that can help you remember which tools and supplies to pack, in addition to bedding, clothing, food, and kitchen and bath essentials.

The RV shakedown trip should be a distraction-free time to get acclimated with your new rig. Plan and take this trip before you start planning other trips, and you’ll be ahead of the game when it comes time for your dream excursions!
