How to Prepare for Boondocking

Boondocking, dispersed camping, off-grid camping—whatever you call it, camping without access to water and power can be challenging yet rewarding at the same time. Boondocking allows you to get closer to nature, and certain survival and conservation instincts can kick into high gear, even if you’re in a comfortable Class A motorhome. Regardless of the type of rig you boondock with, it’s imperative that you are fully prepared before you venture out.

Here are a few ways you can properly prepare for a boondocking trip in your RV:

Charge Batteries and Devices

When you’re boondocking, you’ll be relying on your RV’s batteries and solar power to occasionally run appliances, lights, and other items that require electricity. It’s a good idea to fully charge your RV batteries at home or at a full-service campground before you head off for boondocking.

In addition, charge all of your devices—your cell phones, tablets, laptops, ebook readers, cameras—anything that you use regularly. Charging these devices in advance will help you avoid using battery or solar power right away once you’ve arrived at your campsite.

Clean Solar Panels

Solar panels can collect layers of grime and dirt, which can reduce their effectiveness. So before a boondocking trip, thoroughly and carefully clean your solar panels. Use only cleaning products and soft cloths that are rated for solar panels.

Clean and Flush or Fill Tanks

One of the most important must-dos before boondocking is to flush and clean your black and grey tanks. Doing so will hopefully help you avoid an emergency trip to find a dump station! In addition, you’ll want to clean and fill up your water tank. Be sure to fill the tank with clean, potable water.

Shower!

You and your loved ones will get a little dirty while boondocking, especially because you’ll be trying to conserve water. So before you head out to your dispersed camping location, be sure to get a good shower or bath in first—you never know when your next one might be!

Prep (and Cook) Meals in Advance

Using appliances to cook can be a major drain on power when you’re boondocking. Plus, cooking or grilling full meals can make for a lot of clean up, which uses precious water. For these reasons, it’s best to plan for meals that are easy to make AND don’t require much heating or cooling to eat. Meals like sandwiches and chips, and even pre-cooked foods like kebabs, are excellent options and can be eaten cold. Use compostable plates and napkins to make life even easier.
