How to Stay Warm This Winter In Your RV

For many RVers, the camping season doesn’t end when summer or fall is over. In fact, plenty of people seek out and enjoy winter camping! Full-time RVers don’t really have a choice, unless they head to warmer climes. But you don’t necessarily need to be in a snow-covered frozen tundra to experience cold—plenty of regions around the country record cold temperatures throughout the winter months.

So what can you do to stay warm this winter in your RV? Here are a few easy and affordable ideas!

Insulate Windows and Doors

When you’re camping or living in cold weather, one of the best things you can do is to insulate your RV.

Here are some quick and easy options:

  • The first step to insulating your rig is to re-caulk windows and doors. Air (and heat) can escape easily through these nooks and crannies, so you’ll want to seal them up before cold weather hits.
  • In addition, you should check and replace weatherstripping as needed.
  • Buy a roll of reflective insulating wrap—it looks like aluminum bubble wrap. Cutting and placing sheets of this product over windows and doors will help seal in heat and prevent cold air from seeping in. Another option is to use heavy-duty plastic wrap and double sided tape.

Ensure Your Rig’s Heating Systems are Working

Most RVs have some sort of heating system, such as a furnace or electric fireplace. Before a cold snap hits, make sure that your heating apparatus is fully functional. While testing your furnace, don’t forget to check your supply of propane. Low levels of propane and cold temperatures translate to low pressure, which can cause your furnace to not work. Stock up on plenty of propane to ensure you won’t be stuck out in the cold without any on hand.

Make Use of Portable Heaters

There are plenty of portable heaters on the market that are great for use in your RV. Look for options that are small but powerful and have features such as high heat, low heat, and fan settings. In addition, opt for a heater that has safety features as well, such as overheat protection, automatic shutoff, and a cool-touch exterior.

Invest in an Electric Blanket or Heated Mattress Pad

Similar to a portable heater, you can’t go wrong with a heated electric mattress pad or blanket as a heat source. Many blankets have features such as different temperature settings, timers, and compact design, making for an excellent, lightweight option for most RVers. Some options are battery operated, giving boondockers an opportunity to stay warm on the coldest nights without electricity.
