How to (Temporarily) Win the Battle Against Bugs While RV Camping

We’re easing into the summer camping season, when life seems to slow down and you can appreciate the meaningful things in life like family and nature. Unfortunately, it’s kind of hard to reach that peaceful state of mind when there are a zillion mosquitoes buzzing in your ear and piercing your skin as you try to relax around the campfire.

As humans, we’ll always clash with bugs. We’re outnumbered, so of course we will. But the last thing you want to deal with on your RV camping trip is suffering from bite after bite. So how can you win the battle against pests, even if it’s short lived? Here are a few tips!

Select the Right Campsite

Where do mosquitoes breed? In standing water like marshes and ponds. And bugs like to hide in dense brush and tall grass. So to begin your pest-fighting campaign, select a campsite that is away from water and heavy vegetation.

Wear Clothes That Cover Your Body

When you’re camping, especially in warmer weather, it’s tempting to live in shorts, T-shirts, and bathing suits day in and day out. But wearing minimal clothing will leave you vulnerable to insect bites. In the evenings, on hikes, or during other times when bugs are particularly thick, wear long-sleeve shirts and pants to protect your skin.

Repair Screens

If the window or vent screens in your rig have any holes or tears through which bugs can creep, repair or replace the screens. You can even consider adding screens over openings where there may be none. For example, if your rig didn’t come with a screen on the door, install a magnetic screen door. Ensuring your screens are functional will allow you to enjoy cool evening breezes without being eaten alive.

Repel Bugs

This option is one you may be most familiar with—bug repellent. There are many different types, including wipes and sprays. A study conducted by the Journal of Insect Science showed that repellents with DEET are the best bug sprays for camping, but you may also find success with repellents that feature 30 percent lemon eucalyptus oil.
