Is a Class A Motorhome Right For You?

Buying an RV is one of the biggest investments of time and money you will make in your life, so it’s important to carefully research the types of recreational vehicles that are available so you can be sure to find one that meets your needs. From Class A, B, and C motorhomes to fifth wheels and travel trailers, the options are virtually endless and choosing can quickly become an overwhelming process. One of the first questions to consider is how much you plan on using your RV. Will you and the kids just take the occasional camping trip? Maybe you’re retired and plan on snow birding and traveling for six months out of the year. Or maybe you’ve decided to make a total lifestyle change and live in your rig full time. Many RV enthusiasts who choose to spend 24-7-365 in their RV opt for Class A motorhomes for a variety of advantages they offer:
  • Space – Class A motorhomes are the largest recreational vehicles available and are virtually houses on wheels. These palatial rigs generally start at about 30 feet in length and can be as long as 45 feet. When it comes to storage space, sleeping space, and bathrooms, these rigs are unrivaled when it comes to floor plan and layout options. For full-time RVers who value roominess, privacy, and comfort, Class A rigs are the way to go.
  • Luxury – The spaciousness of Class A motorhomes allows for a variety of luxurious features and upgrades. Models are available with master suites, enclosed showers, dishwashers, washer/dryer units, and multiple slideouts. Surround sound systems and flat screen HDTVs are not uncommon features in many Class A motorhomes.
  • Access – Class A motorhomes, unlike fifth wheels and travel trailers, allow for easy access between the living area and the driver’s cockpit. This offers the convenience of not having to park the rig and unhitch anything when it’s time to eat, sleep, or use the bathroom.
The roomy spaciousness and luxury of Class A motorhomes are not without their disadvantages:
  • Cost – As mentioned above, Class A motorhomes come with all the comforts of home but this doesn’t come cheap. These rigs are by far the most expensive type of RV on the market and generally range anywhere from $60,000 to luxury coaches that can cost up to a million. Pre-owned motorhomes can offer a price break, but you’ll need to determine if a used rig is equipped with all of the features you’re looking for.
  • Fuel efficiency – The size and weight of these houses on wheels make them gas guzzlers. Class A motorhomes can run on either gas or diesel. The largest, higher-end motorhomes will most likely run on diesel, making them more expensive to keep on the road.
  • No auxiliary transportation – Unless you decide to hitch a car to your motorhome, you’ll need to break camp and get your rig back on the road any time you want to do some local sightseeing, run errands, or head out for a meal. This is a hassle and will increase your fuel costs. If you do decide to tow a “toad” or “dinghy”, be sure to check with the manufacturer of the car or SUV to make sure that it is approved for four-wheel towing. Also, check the Department of Transportation towing laws in any states you will be driving through.
