Make Your October Camping Weekend Full of Thrills and Chills

It’s October, and in Florida, that means that temperatures (sometimes) start to level off and spending time outside, especially at night, becomes a priority. In other parts of the country, October brings crisp, cool days and nights and bright, beautiful foliage. But October also means that it’s time to enjoy all things creepy and get ready for Halloween. And what better way to do that than plan a weekend camping trip in your RV that will cause fright and delight in equal measure?

To make your October weekend RV escape something truly ghoulish and creepy, plan to do some of the following activities:

• Decorate your campsite – From spider webs and skeletons to hay bales and scare crows, fall and Halloween decorations can add a bit of spookiness and flair to your RV campsite. Be sure to follow any specific guidelines and rules that the campground may have and don’t set up anything that could be too scary or dangerous for you or anyone around you. If you’re boondocking on secluded public or private lands, be respectful of nature and the wildlife around you.
• Tell ghost stories around the campfire – To really get into the creepy spirit, gather family and friends around the fire and take turns telling ghost stories. Whether the chosen tales are factual or fictional, they’ll surely work their magic and send chills up and down spines.
• Carve pumpkins – Your campground may have pumpkin carving events that you can take part in. It’s a great opportunity to get the kids involves in a craft project and to meet fellow RV and camping enthusiasts and their families. Pumpkin carving is still a fun activity to complete, even if the campground doesn’t host any events. Set up your pumpkins and carving utensils outside on a picnic table and get to work!
• Take a “haunted” night hike or walk – There’s nothing scarier than trying to navigate through the woods at night. You could take part in a night hiking event if your campground hosts one or, with the proper precautions, you could venture out without a group of campers and just go with family and friends. Remember to have a specific route fully planned out and to tell someone who is staying back at camp where you’ll be going and how long you plan to be gone. Additionally, take plenty of flashlights to light your way and carry a fully charged cell phone to make calls in case of an emergency.
• Go trick-or-treating around the “neighborhood” – Fun for kids and adults alike, trick-or-treating around your campground during designated times can give you a chance to get some exercise, meet your RV neighbors, and, most importantly, score some sweet treats.
