Pros and Cons of Slide Outs

Slide outs on RVs were made popular in the 1990s and have since become a feature that many manufacturers incorporate into their rigs.

But is it worth it to have slides outs? Let’s take a look at some pros and cons.

Pros

Slide outs offer a number of benefits, including:

  • Extra room – A rig with one or more slides can significantly add to the overall livable square footage. And that’s a giant plus when you’re already living in a confined space.
  • More windows and natural light – Slide outs are often equipped with additional windows, which can create a more airy atmosphere inside your rig and provide better ventilation. In addition, more windows means more natural light to enjoy!
  • A more traditional home feel – Slides outs can create a more homey feel inside an RV. In fact, the extra space can allow for layouts that include large dining areas and kitchens with islands and full-size appliances. Having the true comforts of a home on wheels can’t be beat!

Cons

On the other hand, slides outs do have disadvantages, too, including:

  • Constant maintenance and repairs – Because of the mechanics required to operate slides, a high level of maintenance and repairs are required to keep them in good working order. Otherwise, a whole host of problems can arise. Regularly checking and maintaining the slide motors, hydraulic lines, tracks, and other components is necessary.
  • Insulation issues – As large, moveable portions of an RV, it is impossible for slides to be fully insulated. Air can infiltrate along the top and sides of the slide and can make keeping a constant indoor temperature difficult, especially in extreme temperatures.
  • Threat of water damage and leaks – Any RV owner will tell you that it’s a constant struggle to prevent moisture from seeping into a rig and causing damage. That struggle can be compounded in an RV with slides. You must be vigilant in keeping the tops and sides of slides free from rainwater and dew, especially before bringing your slides in.

Other cons of slides can include issues with rig weight and balance. Slides even can affect how well an RV fits into a campsite!

Ultimately, every person considering buying an RV will need to determine if slides are a “must-have” or a “no way.” Taking time to research and understand slide outs is key to making a decision.
