Questions You Should Ask Before Reserving a Campsite

Not all campsites are perfect for every RV traveler. What works for a family of four might be awful for a retired couple. That said, it’s truly important to not leave your campsite selection to random chance, if possible. Before you make a reservation, think long and hard about what you really want out of your campsite, and before booking, do research and call the campground to ask your questions. Pull up a campground map online for reference and ask to speak to a reservation specialist or other campground staff member who knows the campground well.

Some of the questions you should be asking before you book an RV campsite include:

• Do you have back-in and pull-through sites? – If you’re driving a big rig or are somewhat new to driving a travel trailer, you may prefer to use pull-through sites, which allow you to drive right through the site to the spot you desire. Back-in sites require you to back in the vehicle and may be better suited to your needs if you have an RV that is relatively easy to maneuver. Pull-through sites, while convenient, can sometimes offer less privacy and scenery than back-in sites, so consider not only your driving skills, but also the type of view you want to have while camping.
• Do you have waterfront or water view campsites? – This is an important question to ask, particularly if your idea of the perfect camping trip involves kicking back near a lake or river. Yet for some people and families, waterfront campsites can be more hassle than anything else, especially if small children are around, as the risk for accidents in and around the water can increase dramatically.
• What hookup options do you have? – Some campsites will have full hookups, which includes 30- or 50-amp electric service, water, and sewer. Other sites may only have water and electric. Still others may have no hookups at all. If boondocking is what you’re after, a site with no hookups is perfect. But if you need your gadgets to be charged up all the time and to be within a few steps of your air-conditioned rig, then a site with full hookups may be for you.
• Is there a good mix of sites that are close to and far away from the action of the campground? – If you have young kids, being close to the playground or other hot spots of the campground might be for you. But, if you’re a solo traveler looking for peace and quiet, a more secluded spot may be just what you’re looking for. Also consider whether your chosen spot is in the sun or shade and plan accordingly.

Other questions to consider asking:

• What amenities are available (pool, playgrounds, general store, showers/bathrooms, laundry facilities, etc.)?
• Are there picnic tables, grills, fire pits, or other such amenities at each campsite?
• Is there wireless internet access? Is it free for campers or is there an additional fee?
