Quick Tips for Maintaining Your RV’s Air Conditioner

Your RV is a unique home on wheels, allowing you to travel and have the creature comforts of home wherever you go. But with that flexibility comes challenges. As a rig moves on roads, the vibrations caused can affect appliances, sealants, joints, and components of water, electrical, and propane systems.

One of the most expensive appliances that can be affected over time is your air conditioner. For this reason, it’s essential to stay on top of daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual maintenance tasks to ensure your AC runs smoothly.

Here are a few quick tips for maintaining your RVs air conditioner:

Have it Regularly Serviced

Take your rig to have the AC inspected by a certified service technician once or twice a year. It’s especially important to do this before the hot weather season.

Clean Your Filters Often

Your AC’s filters help trap dust and allergens. But when the filters get dirty, they can hamper the air conditioner’s performance and waste a lot of energy. To get the best results out of your AC, clean your filters regularly, especially during times of increased usage. Your AC unit will run efficiently and cool your space.

Check the Cover and Evaporator Coils

If you feel comfortable doing so, get up on the roof of your rig and check to make sure the AC cover shroud is securely fastened to the roof. While you’re up there, you should also check the evaporator coils. They look like metal fins on the back side of the exterior AC unit. If these fins are bent or damaged in any way, it can drastically affect how your AC works. To keep your cover and coils safe, avoid parking under low-hanging branches and keep the AC unit covered when your RV is not in use.
