Renting an RV

Renting an RV

Wondering if the RV lifestyle is for you? Before you jump into such a large purchase, you may find that renting an RV is a great way to test out the waters and find out if ownership is right for you.
Renting not only gives you the chance to drive different types of RVs, it also gives you the chance to learn the ropes of RV ownership, such as maintenance, parking and navigating and other tips and techniques.

Renting the right RV

Type of RV

With all the different types of RVs on the market, you’ll want to do your research to find the best one to suit your needs. Renting the right size RV is important to ensure you have a safe and comfortable trip. You’ll want to find something large enough to accommodate all passengers, including both sleeping arrangements and storage capacity, but not something so large where you won’t feel comfortable maneuvering it on the road. You may also find that certain roads are too windy or narrow for some RVs – it’s always best to find this out before you make a purchase and realize you’re not able to travel where you please.
RVs also come in a variety of floorplans, so you’ll want to consider this when comparing different models. Once you spend some time in your RV you may find a certain floorplan suits you better than others.

How do you plan on traveling?

If you plan on heading to one destination and traveling a lot from there, you may want to tow a vehicle behind or rent a towable. If you’re happy to stay in one place or plan on walking or using bikes as a way to get around, a motorhome may be a good option.

If you plan on renting a towable RV, ensure your vehicle is equipped to handle the load. The type of vehicle you have will often dictate the size of RV you’re able to tow. Be sure to find this out before you rent an RV you’re not able to tow!

Whatever you decide to rent, renting before buying will give you the chance to discover which type of RV will fit your travel style.

Finding the right rental company

Once you know what type of RV to rent, you’ll want to make sure you find a reputable rental company. Here are a few tips:

Mishaps

While we always hope for the best on a trip, it’s always good to find a rental company that will cover you should something go wrong. Be sure to ask what would happen if an appliance stops working, your RV stalls alongside the road, your propane tank starts to leak, etc. A good company will guarantee things such as appliances and arrange any repairs for you.

Insurance

Being properly covered in the event of an accident or damage to the RV is one of the most important things you can do.

Whether you arrange coverage through your auto insurance or purchase it through the rental company, know your coverage, deductibles and limitations. Also, if there is any damage to the RV (dents, scrapes, etc.) make sure this is noted in writing before you take the RV into your possession.

Other things to consider

Before you take off in your rental RV, it may be a good idea to read the manual or watch the instructional DVD. Knowing how to operate the appliances, slides, leveling jacks, generator, empty the water tanks and fill the fresh water tank will save you time and inconvenience on your trip. Read up in advance so you can ask the rental company any questions you may have.

Another thing to consider is the age and fuel type of the RV. Newer RVs may come at a higher rental price but typically include more features and sometimes even better gas mileage. Diesel vehicles are more efficient but diesel tends to cost more and is not always readily available in more remote destinations.

Planning on taking pets on the road with you? Before you pack Fido, you’ll want to look for a rental company that allows pets. Some may require a cleaning/pet deposit in addition to the standard deposit.

While it may take a few trips to find the right RV, renting can save you money in the long run and help you feel comfortable in your decision when you’re finally ready to purchase.
