RV Features for Off-Grid Camping

RVing is a great way to build your own community, to find new friends, and experience new places. It’s about having potlucks and sharing s’mores around a campfire in the campground. But many times, RVing is about escaping from it all, unplugging from technology, and communing more closely with nature. To do that, boondocking and off-grid camping is the answer. But to properly and safely go off grid, it’s important for your rig to have certain features.

Lightweight Construction

First of all, it’s best off-grid rigs to be lightweight towable trailers or truck campers. These RVs will allow you to maneuver more easily in rough terrain such as forests and rocky hillsides that is usually a part of off-grid and dispersed camping.

Strong Frames and Raised Axles

Camping off grid means traversing rough terrain and living in remote locations. For this reason, your rig should be built lightweight but also be durable enough with a solidly constructed frame and raised axles to withstand the jostling it will surely experience. Choose a rig with all-terrain tires or the option to upgrade.

Large Fresh Water Tanks

When you’re off grid, you don’t have easy access to water and need to supply it yourself. Having one or more large fresh water tanks will help ensure you have enough water for a certain number of days. If you’re shopping for an off-grid RV, be sure to compare the tank sizes. Similarly, it’s important to have large enough black water and grey water tanks, too, so you don’t have to dump as often while you are off grid.

Solar Power Packages or Prewiring

Many RV manufacturers are offering solar power packages as upgrades, so review your options and select a rig that meets your needs. Otherwise, you can opt for a rig that is prewired for solar (for installation at another time) and even an inverter, which will allow you to use 110-volt power wherever you’re located.

Propane and 12-Volt Appliances

Full-size appliances are excessive when it comes to boondocking and going off grid. But smaller appliances powered by propane or 12 volts of electricity are ideal. Ensure your rig has a refrigerator, cooktop, oven, and TV that meet these requirements.
