RV Mods and Upgrades

Being on the road doesn’t mean you have to be off the grid. If you love having all the comforts of home while traveling the open road in your RV, you may be wondering about the different ways you can make your vehicle a bit more advanced. These days, there’s no end to the products and upgrades available for your home away from home, even when camping and boondocking. From internet access to digital thermostats, here are the top tech mods for your RV.
Digital thermostats – Analog thermostats can cause the temperature in your RV to shift considerably from your target temperature, which can contribute to discomfort and high energy usage. A digital, programmable thermostat is a relatively easy, inexpensive mod that could pay for itself over time and can be wired to an RV’s HVAC unit.
Sound system – Whether you’re watching a movie or listening to music, having a great sound system in your RV could be a luxury you just don’t want to do without. Speakers can be mounted inside or outside and many can be controlled by remote
Wireless RV Internet – While many RV parks offer WiFi internet access, it might not always be reliable or fast. If you work from the road or simply want to make sure you are always connected, cellular data may be the way to go. Tablets are a great, compact way to always have access to email and directions and you can attach a keyboard or mouse should you need to settle down and get some work done.
Solar panels – Harnessing the sun’s energy is a great energy-saving solution for RVers who want to travel cheaply, quietly and cleanly. Roof-mounted solar panels can also greatly decrease your dependence on power sources and generators, allowing you to enjoy dry camping anywhere you please. Depending on your solar setup, you can get around 50-55 amps of power per hour when in full sun.
Composting toilets – Composting toilets are waterless toilets that rely on a vent system and the natural process of decomposition to break down waste. The key is creating the right environment of moisture, heat and oxygen to ensure that waste breaks down properly and doesn’t smell. Compost toilets save water and energy, plus they eliminate the need to empty the black holding tank of your RV.
Tankless hot water heater – If you love the convenience and never-ending hot water of a tankless hot water heater in your home, you’ll love it even more in your RV. Whether you’re hooked up to a sewer or dry camping, you can enjoy long hot showers without waiting 20 to 30 minutes for a six-gallon tank to heat up.
Satellite television – Avid RV travelers love the joys of nature and getting away from all the hustle and bustle of life, but that’s not to say they don’t want to kick back and relax with a good movie or TV show while on the road. In-motion RV satellites get signals even while you’re moving, but be sure to choose one that is compatible with all the satellite networks.
RV GPS – While not technically a mod to your RV, having a GPS specifically designed for RVs is a must. Using your car’s GPS simply doesn’t take RV factors like size and weight into account. However, RV-specific navigation technology alerts you to bridge weight limits, tunnel clearances, campground locations, speed limit changes and more.
