2020 brought challenges none of us expected, including working and schooling children from home for most of the year. But many people and families wanted to take advantage of the new remote lifestyle and travel and work safely instead of staying home. As a result, the RV industry exploded with more than 430,000 new motorhomes and travel trailers sold in 2020, according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA). For 2021, RVIA is projecting that sales will outperform last year’s numbers and estimates about 500,000 new units will be sold.

This surge in RV enthusiasm has also seen shifts in the demographics of the typical RVer. Now, many digitally inclined members of Gen-X and Millennial generations have joined the ranks of RV owners.

Not surprisingly, the RV industry is springing into action to cater to this new market and the rise in remote workers, designing rigs to accommodate their customers’ needs.

One such need is for dedicated office space. Sure, the dinette or couch in a rig can serve as a workspace during the day and a spot for family time and meals during off hours. But moving work supplies and equipment multiple times a day may not be the most efficient approach for some people.

Airstream

Airstream’s new Flying Cloud 30FB Office model addresses this issue with a dedicated desk space built into the back of the rig. The area features USB ports, built-in drawers for storage, and even has a pull-out table when extra desk space is needed. This Airstream model also has blackout curtains on the windows and a privacy divider included, making the space perfect for video conference calls.

Winnebago

The Winnebago Travato, a Class B camper van, doesn’t have a dedicated office space, but does offer pull-out tables which are perfect for anyone simply working off a laptop or with little need for a traditional desk space.

DIY Options

Buying an RV designed around remote working and schooling isn’t for everyone, but for those who still need an office space can consider taking a DIY approach. For example, dinette furniture can be replaced with a desk, or a cabinet or dresser in the master bedroom area can be converted into desk space.
