Specialty Items You Might Have to Buy for Your Rig

Getting a new (or new-to-you) rig is exciting. You check out all the features and bells and whistles and can’t wait to take it out for its maiden voyage!

But what you might not know is that not everything from your home is “plug and play” in your RV. There are some specialty items you may have to consider buying before you hit the road. Let’s take a look at a few. 

Sheets 

An RV mattress is the same as the mattress in your home, so can use the same sheets, right? Not always. There are many different types of RV mattresses and some aren’t the exact same size as standard mattresses. For example, a standard queen mattress is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, but many RVs come equipped with short queen mattresses, which are five inches shorter than a standard. As such, your regular sheets from home may not always exactly fit your RV mattress. For a perfect, hassle-free fit, you could buy sheets made specifically for the size mattress you have.

Towels

Surely your home towels can be used in your RV, right? Yes, of course! However, storage space is often limited in an RV, especially in the bathroom. That means storing your favorite big, fluffy towels is going to be a big challenge. So what’s the solution? You could invest in some microfiber towels. They are more compact than standard towels and can more easily fit into small spaces. What’s more, microfiber towels dry faster than regular towels, and that is a big plus for RV living – limiting humidity and moisture in an RV interior should be every owner’s goal. 

Water Hose

A hose is a hose is a hose. You should be able to use your garden hose for your RV water hookups, right? Well, yes, but you shouldn’t. A garden hose could be made with materials and chemicals that are not safe for consumption. A potable water hose, on the other hand, is not made from those materials and is rated specifically for use with drinking water. It’s always a good idea for you to use a potable water hose when hooking up. Look for the all-white hose in your RV supply store or online. Bonus: They’re affordable!

Kitchenware 

If you love to cook, you may want to bring all your pots and pans and baking dishes in your RV. They’ll all fit, right? Not necessarily. Again, RVs have limited storage space and often feature smaller-than-average appliances, so your cookie sheets may be way too big for the oven. And your giant pasta pot and skillet might take up too much space in the cupboards. So you may want to consider looking for kitchenware that best suits the space you do have. Look for stackable pots, compact ovenware sets, and melamine plates and cups that fit in your cupboards.
