Ways to Make the Most of Your Memorial Day Weekend RV Camping Trip

Marking the kickoff to summer and peak camping season, this upcoming Memorial Day weekend is sure to be one of the busiest on record for RVers and campgrounds—if you were lucky enough to snag a coveted campsite, congratulations! Whether you’re camping for the weekend or the full week, you’ll want to rest and relax, of course. But you should also make the most of your time with family and friends. Here are some easy ways to do that!

Take Time to Honor the Fallen

Memorial Day became an official holiday in 1971 to honor the men and women who have served in American military and have died protecting the United States. It’s important to take time out of your weekend to remember those who have died to protect our freedoms. Some easy ways you can do this is to deck out your campsite with American flags and other patriotic decorations, visit nearby war memorials, or take a quiet walk through a local cemetery and look for gravestones of veterans.

Play Family Games

Having fun activities to do as a family is key to enjoying your weekend. One surefire option is to organize some fun games to play. Sure, you could have a fun game of softball or volleyball, or you could even stage your own family Olympics! You also can’t go wrong with playing cards and board games each night. Whatever you do, ensure that the games can be enjoyed by all ages and experience levels in your group.

Plan Cookouts

The summer season just wouldn’t be the same without firing up the grill and eating food with friends and loved ones. If you’re camping this holiday weekend, you likely already have meals planned and are itching to get burgers and hotdogs on the grill. But take it a step further and invite other families to join you for meals and socializing around the campfire.

Take Up Geocaching

What is geocaching? It’s an outdoor activity that is similar to a scavenger hunt and is a great outdoor activity for families. Using GPS, geocachers can find previously hidden “caches” of trinkets during walks and explorations. Simply create an account on geocaching.com or on the Geocaching® smartphone app to begin geocaching. Then find a nearby documented geocache, which will show up on a map in the app, or enter the posted coordinates of a geocache into your handheld GPS. Then you’re ready to begin your search!
