What Food Should You Pack for an RV Trip?

There is no better feeling than taking off in your RV for a trip. Whether you’re on a quick weekend getaway or a lengthy sojourn across multiple states, being on the road is an exciting time. Of course, you need food on a trip, but constantly eating out is going to add up. Luckily, traveling with a house on wheels has its advantages and one of them is being able to cook on the go. But what foods should you bring with you? Here are some tips!

Start with Non-Perishables

Non-perishables are the types of items that won’t go bad after a couple days or weeks, such as canned items and dry goods. So think about meals in which you can incorporate non-perishables. These items make for excellent meals and some can even be stand alone snacks as needed:

  • Canned or packaged tuna fish in oil
  • Beans
  • Rice and pasta
  • Cereals and oatmeal
  • Peanut butter
  • Jams and jellies
  • Crackers
  • Canned or bottled tomatoes and tomato sauces

Once you have a core selection of these items, begin planning for perishable items, like meats, fruits, and veggies.

Don’t Forget the Cooking Essentials

Even if you aren’t an amateur chef, you should still plan to pack the core essentials that every cook must have. These include:

  • Oils – You don’t have to go crazy bringing multiple types of oils, but you should at least have one oil with a high smoke point, such as canola oil, to use for high-heat cooking (think sautéing or frying. In addition, pack a good quality olive oil to use on salads, in marinades, and low-heat applications.
  • Spices – Unless you have a mega coach, storage is probably limited in your rig. For this reason, you should avoid bringing your entire spice rack. However, you should bring some essentials such as salt, pepper, garlic and onion powders, and one or two others that you use frequently (hello, smoked paprika!). You can also opt for seasoning and herb blends, such as Italian seasoning and taco seasoning to save space.

Plan for Snacks, Too

Unless you’re not a snacker, you’ll want to have some easy snack options on hand for your trip. Ideally, choose snacks that are nutritious and filling—such as nuts, fruit, and cheese—rather than processed foods full of empty calories, sugar, and fat, such as chips, cookies, and pastries.

And because intense hunger can strike even while you’re driving, pack finger-food snacks that can easily be eaten quickly with one hand and without making a mess.
