Why You Should Consider RV Life in Your 20’s

Maybe you’ve just graduated college or are a few years past that point. Perhaps you have a job you enjoy but you’re struggling with “cubicle life.” You’re in your 20s and you’re thinking about how you want to structure your life. What are the next steps? Do you move to a different part of the country to experience new people and cultures? Do you stay put?  

If this sounds like you, consider the RV lifestyle. Here are a few reasons why:

Flexibility

If the idea of staying put in one place for years on end makes your skin crawl, then RV or van life might be for you. Living in an RV gives you the opportunity to travel the country on your timeline. Have a job prospect out in California? You can pick up and go. Want to explore each of the 50 states before you turn 30? You can make that happen. An RV is your home on wheels, and you can take it with you pretty much wherever you want to go.

Affordability

Believe it or not, RV life can be an affordable option when compared to regular brick-and-mortar lifestyle. While rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the middle of the country is in the $500 to $700 per month range, rents for similar apartments on the East and West Coasts often start at $1000 per month and are often much higher. If you invest in a gently used RV, you can work toward paying off something that you’ll own rather than paying rent, which is money you’ll never see again. Or you can buy an RV outright and not have a payment for it at all!

Granted, RVs do need to be properly and carefully maintained and you will have to budget for that. In addition, you’ll have to budget in gas, food, campground site rent, and other normal life expenses. But in the grand scheme of things, you could end up saving money living in an RV–money that you could put toward any student debt you might owe.

Ability to Work Remotely

Unless you’re independently wealthy and never need to work, you’ll have to earn money somehow to make your RV lifestyle possible. Luckily, there are more jobs than ever before that allow for workers to log in remotely and get work done. Or, if you have more of an entrepreneurial spirit, you can start your own business or blog. You may have to work side hustles for a while as you move toward monetizing your website or earning money on a product or service you offer, but you’ll be your own boss.

Of course, the RV lifestyle isn’t for everyone so carefully consider your options before you rush into any decisions. But if you’re a young self-starter who isn’t afraid of adventure and striking out on your own, the living in an RV could give you the new start you’ve been looking for.
