Should You Have an RV Roadside Assistance Plan?

Picture this: You’re traveling down the road in your rig, everything is going great. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, you’re making great time to your destination. Suddenly, you start to lose power. The engine starts shuddering and sputtering. Before you know it, you’re on the side of the road, immobile, unable to get your RV started and back on the road.

No one likes to think about the possibility of breaking down, especially in an RV. But breakdowns happen and you’ll experience at least one at some point in your road traveling life. So what do you do?

If you have a roadside assistance plan, you can call for help!

What’s Included in a Roadside Assistance Plan?

Plans will differ among providers, so if you’re looking for coverage, you should carefully review each plan’s benefits. Ultimately, you’ll want a plan that includes towing, dead battery jumps, fuel service to get you to the closest gas station, and air service for filling for tires (or even tire changing).

Some plans offer other perks and extras that others don’t, so take your time considering pros and cons of all plans. Don’t rush to make a decision!

Check Your RV Insurance Policy

A great place to start your research is with your own RV insurer. Many policies include some sort of roadside assistance program, so check your policy to see what benefits, if any, your insurer offers.

Sign Up for a Plan

If your insurance company doesn’t offer roadside assistance, or doesn’t offer a robust enough plan, you can search for other providers.

Getting a plan through AAA is a good choice, as  they’ve been in business serving stranded drivers since 1902. The organization offers several tiers of RV roadside assistance plans.

Another popular option for roadside assistance is membership with Good Sam, which offers several tiers as well, in addition to covering more vehicle types and operators than AAA.

These are just two options, but there are plenty more on the market. Feel free to stack coverage, too—one plan may have elements that another doesn’t, so you can buy both to create the coverage you desire.

Have you used RV roadside assistance plans before? Which one did you opt for and did you think it was worth it? Let us know in the comments or contact us today!
